Chimney cleanings are often the most neglected preventative maintenance done on home. Regularly cleaning your chimney is important for many reasons. Foremost, a chimney cleaning removes creosote deposits in the chimney flue. Creosote is highly flammable, and can cause a chimney fire over time if buildup is allowed. During the spring and summer months creosote build up in the flue can cause smells in your home that can be very displeasing. The hot humid air causes air within the flue to humidify and become heavy which falls down the chimney, bringing unwanted smells along with it. An annual chimney cleaning will uncover any defects or fire hazards in your fireplace or chimney that may be minor and easily fixed. However, if left unattended for a period of time, neglect could lead to other costly repairs or even fire damage as a result of a chimney related structural fire.

Fireplace and chimney inspections are all part of a good preventative maintenance plan. To determine if your fireplace and chimney are in good working order we evaluate the following: Firebox or (appliance connected to the chimney), damper (and all parts), smoke chamber, flue passage, interior brick work or fireplace trim, exterior brick work or siding, cap, crown or chase cover, chimney flashing and surrounding roof materials

Chimney caps are a very important part of the chimney system. Chimney cap keeps rain from entering directly into the flue, which can cause erosion of the flue tiles and the joints. Weak and eroded joints caused by water damage to flue tiles can shift and become offset. Offset flue tiles cause gaps in the chimney flue that allow heat and smoke to escape the flue passage. Once this occurs the chimney must be relined. Chimney caps also keep animals and other rodents out of chimneys. During the warmer and hotter spring and summer months, air conditioning escaping up the chimney provides a cool place above the fireplace opening for rodents to build their own homes. Chimney caps also keeps debris such as leaves, pine cones, and small twigs from falling off of trees into a home’s chimney flue.
